Muni Minute

Spring is going to give us a little taste of warmth this Thursday only to follow it up with a Colorado low for the weekend bringing cold temperatures and a ton of rain. I am keeping faith that golf is right around the corner though and we have been chipping away at the course (when the weather has allowed us) trying to make sure that once the golfing weather does arrive we can get you out as fast as possible!! For the time being I am really hoping that we can have our member clean up day on Saturday April 21st at 10am, the support the last few years has been amazing and its a huge help in getting the course cleaned up for the season.

We have had some great volunteers out this week planting 25 new tree on the property. Thank you Dan Martin, Dean Sharp and Carol Sharp for digging these 25 holes and putting in the trees. Also a huge thanks to Riley Walsh Construction for picking up and delivering these trees. (Photos on Facebook page)

Now for the good stuff Opening Day!!! I have my eyes set on hopefully being able to open Saturday April 21st at 12pm following our course clean up. This is a very tentative date and if the weather turns before this we will try and get open prior, but if it gets worst I plan on being open Monday April 23rd no matter what!! Updates will be given as these dates near including cart status and range opening.

I hope everyone is as excited for the 2018 season at the Muni as I am and even though April has not been the month we have all been hoping for the predictions once this cold breaks look amazing for Golf.

Muni Minute

Hello Everyone

Let me start by thanking everyone who has signed up for our Newsletter!! Subscriptions have been flying in and its a great way for me to get information to everyone about the Muni. I apologize to any one who signed up early and got the very blank Muni Moles email.  I didn’t realized that it even sent email notifications for events added to the calendar but that will be a useful tool moving forward in notifying members of upcoming club events, along with our newly modified Tee-on tee sheet reminders.

So far Spring has not offered up much golf friendly weather, and although Wednesday and Thursday look great the forecast to follow continues to disappoint. I promise the staff and myself will be doing everything possible to get you out golfing as soon as we can once we have some golfing weather. I will also be posting a member clean up day before we open for anyone interested in lending a hand with a rake for a few hours, but with the 14 day forecast I don’t see a suitable day quite yet. I hope maybe that forecast will change and we can have it on Masters weekend with a little clean up followed by a BBQ and some Masters viewing but I will confirm a date once I know the weather will cooperate. In the meantime I’ve had a few people ask if they could go out on course and rake on their spare time and that is perfectly fine. Huge Thank You for your help as it is greatly appreciated.

Upcoming Dates To Remember

April 18th– Men’s Day Meeting 7pm in Clubhouse

April 28th– Ladies Day Coffee and Get Together 10am in Clubhouse

May 8th– Ladies Night begins

May 9th– Men’s Day begins

May 12th– Members Club Opening 11am shotgun

Hope to see everyone soon

Palm Springs Golf Vacation

Just over a month ago I was asked if I wanted to join two of our Muni Members and one staff member on a trip to Palm Springs CA. being as I have a very flexible winter schedule and last year I ventured south for a winter golf break for the first time to Alabama and ended up loving it so much that a month later I was on my way to Florida it was an easy YES!! With that being said I was worried about a trip to Palm Springs getting on the high side of a pricey golf trip, that left very quickly when I seen everything Palm Springs has to offer!!

We were able to secure a flight from Toronto to Palm Springs Direct/Return for $400 which was a steal, we really had to look and be flexible to find this but every Monday Air Canada does one round trip to Palm Springs making a Monday to Monday trip very easy. Palm Spring also has a million AirBNB offering mountain views, pools and when split 4 or 8 ways for a golf vacation become very cheap.

Now to the good stuff the Golf, now it may be a little basis as I can only speak for the course I saw or played but when Palm Springs says they are the golf capital they are not lying, it was very hard to go more then 2 or 3 blocks without seeing another golf resort or course.

The first course we ventured to was Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort which offers the Legends course and the Resort course. It was an easy 7 minutes from the airport and made for a great first round straight of the plane. It was $39 dollars for 18 holes with a cart and 2 draft beers. It was a fairly open course that only over seeded tee’s fairways and greens, but made for a great first round to knock off the winter rust, and still offered great mountain views and greens.

Day 2 we where able to play Mission Lakes Country Club the course that our AirBnB condo was located on. (this was approx. 15 minutes from Palm Springs). Mission Lakes was located at the base of one of the 360 degree surrounding mountains and had 3 hole actually perched in the mountain which offered breath taking views of the Coachellla Valley and a par 3 number 12 that played a 140 foot drop from tee to green. This course was in fantastic shape and I highly recommend it on your tour of the area for a round. They over seed the whole course and nothing was out of place. The cost here is $69 for a non member for 18 with a cart but well worth it.

Day 3 was the Mother load of a golf day when we were able to play PGA West Stadium course home of the Career Builder Challenge won this year by Jon Rahm, and it was everything you see on T.V. and more. Mountain views unbelievable conditions, and the challenge of trying to post a score from where the pros play. (this is not easy, hitting the ball was fantastic but huge extremely fast greens with mountain influenced breaks made chipping and putting a whole new thing). We were lucky enough to find a Golfnow deal for $95 dollars but this regularly runs in the $200 range , but is an experience that can’t be beat. PGA West also offer 4 other course to play at the resort and all are in outstanding shape.

Day 4 we played what I thought was the worst of the course we played but still offered a fantastic round at Desert Dunes by Robert Trent Jones Jr. It was labeled as a desert style links with natural desert feet off fairway and they were not lying. The course it self still played extremely well with views of the mountains, and a coyote that made an appearance but the natural vegetation and over growth just didn’t fit my eye and made many tee shots blind. With that being said though this course has held U.S. open qualifiers, and was around the $50 mark for a 7am tee time.

Day 4 we were also able to sneak in an afternoon Par 3 course a Cimarron Golf Resort this was fantastic and one of use was stated saying I didn’t realize we were playing a championship par 3 course whatever that is but it offered 4 sets of tees and par 3’s that ranged from 120 to 245 yards and a course that was manicured to the finest like it full 18 hole championship course beside it.

Day 5  we ventured about 45 minutes to Indio to play Terra Lago home of the  2001 skins game between Tiger Woods, Jasper Parnevik, Greg Norman, and Colin Montgomerie, this was a great golf course which was $53 for 18 holes with a cart, and offered a different look with rolling sand dunes and well placed water.

Day 6 we made a made an hour drive to the town of Riverside to play Oak Quarry this is a must if your in the Palm Springs/ LA area. It was built on the side of a mountain and offered views that cant be beat. The cost of $55 for 18 holes and cart was worth every penny, just try not to lose balls off the side of some of the 200 foot drops just feet off the fairways.

Day 7 saw us play a second round at Mission Lakes to end the trip and it was extremely nice to get a second look at a course and be more familiar with the breaks etc..

Courses that we had a chance to see and not play that need a mention are Escena, The Classic Club, Cimarron the Boulder course, and many many more.

Away from the golf for a second Palm Springs offered a ton of things to do with a weekly Thursday night market downtown which closes a whole street for 6 blocks, outlet malls just outside of town, and a tram to the mountain top with unlimited hiking biking etc. there is endless fun in the sun.

Till the next adventure or if 4 more want to join us next year.

Muni Minute- 2018 Rates, Early Membership Dates, and Events

Hello Everyone

2018 at the Muni has already started for me, and although it feels like it is 3 long cold months away preparation for our 2018 season is well on its way. Last year we saw the addition of our new website, and with that being said I learned very quickly that I don’t know how to operate computers as well as I thought I did (writing code is not easy) and it wasn’t used to its max potential. I am trying hard to learn and make that change this year, our 2018 event calendar has been filled out already and dates for events such as Club championships etc have been added. (some of these dates are subject to change e.g. Romeo cup depended on SCC etc.)  Minor events or small group bookings will not be added to calendar, but bigger groups will be so you can see what is happening at your course. I really stress that it’s important as members to use the website as it contains the events calendar, online tee time booking, and also all of our Muni Minutes and info, along with sharing these to our Facebook page.

The 2018 rates have also been uploaded along with the dates and times for our Early membership sales. (see calendar or events!!) I have noticed that the first time you visit site the 2017 info will still be showing but if you refresh the page it will change instantly for you. **If you can’t make the early membership sales dates or times please email me and I will try my best to arrange a time to meet you. Please only use this option if its a absolute must.

I would also like to welcome our new board members, Jack Brooks, Mark Nelson and Al Holmes we are happy to have you as part of the board and are looking forward to the 2018 season.

Hope your keeping warm.

Sr Games Muni Vs. Mitchell

Last Thursday 24 players from the Muni travelled west to the Mitchell G. & C.C. to complete our home and home series against the Mitchell Seniors. The Muni seniors had a slim lead of 2 points, using the Stableford format, heading back to Mitchell. Although the rain was threatening, we completed our day. And a great day it was, well not great because the Mitchell Seniors battled back to win by 8 points, making them the overall winners by 6 points. (934 to 928).  We had a number of 8’s on our scorecards and although 8’s may be good for Crazy 8’s, they proved to be our nemesis on this day. Jeff Healey led our squad feeling quite comfortable on his old course and being a multiple Senior’s Champion with 39 points, followed by Jimmy Avery (who would like to take back his crazy 8 on hole 15) with 36 points followed by Bud Dixon, John Brown and Ken Reilly rounding out our top 5.
We would like to thank Kyle Brodhagen from our course and Tim Ertel from the Mitchell course and especially Bruce Barnes for organizing the event for Mitchell. Also the cooks and kitchen staff for 2 great meals. Thanks to all for participating and as they say – Maybe next year.
